Teddy bear collectors definitely know the name Steiff. Do you know
the first animal created by Margarete Steiff? An elephant actually
meant to be a pincushion and in the early days instead of the Steiff name being
on that famous button it was an elephant. Steiff started in the late 1800's but wasn't until 1902 when the Steiff 55PB was created. Wish it did, but nope PB doesn't stand for
Purplebear. 55 was for cm tall, P stood for plush and B was for jointed.
(Beweglich means mobile in German.) Mohair plush was used for the first time and
in
1903 this bear was sold at the Leipzig Spring Fair in Germany. Think we've all
heard the Teddy Roosevelt story. That began the teddy bear popularity. 3,000 Steiff bears sold that year.
Featured below is a variety of Steiff bears. There's Steiff mini teddy bears, just a teeny 3 inches. Also, 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch,
