Mini blinds, vinyl blinds, faux wood blinds, wood blinds, curtains, draperies, shades, shutters, drapery hardware and other window treatments

Window treatments are one of the first purchases you'll make for your home. Don't think people realize all that's involved in covering those windows until they actually do it. First, decide the type of window treatment you'd like. Blinds, curtains, draperies, shades or shutters. Mini blinds are just what they sound like and there are:
  • horizontal blinds - (also referred to as Venetian blinds) aluminum blinds, faux wood blinds, vinyl blinds or wood blinds
  • vertical blinds - aluminum blinds, fabric blinds or vinyl blinds

Curtains and draperies come in lots of different styles and fabrics. Shades can be light filtering shades or room darkening shades:

  • cellular shades - (also referred to as honeycomb blinds) are energy efficient
  • pleated shades - are folded accordion style and in many different colors, fabrics and textures
  • roller shades - are one piece and usually made from cotton, linen, or other tightly woven fabrics.
  • woven shades - roman shades are quite similar and come in strips of wood, natural fibers, reeds, or grasses.
Shutters - traditional shutters have smaller louvers and plantation shutters have wider louvers. Materials are extruded vinyl, vinyl laminated on a foam or wood core, and solid wood.

In non-technical terms, do you want your blinds, curtains or whichever you choose, to end at the window sill or below? (if below it should be about 4 inches below the window frame) If you want them to be floor length they should be about half an inch from the floor. Definitely want to be sure nothing is going to hang by a vent or anything flamable. Do the measuring, then just decide type of window treatment you'd like, choose the colors and then add drapery hardware. You can save with coupons, sales and other savings included with the descriptions of the sites.
