Thinking of purchasing a diamond but not really sure what you should be looking for? It can be a little intimidating but it doesn't have to be. It's always a good idea to learn a little about the four c's:
  • Cut - what gives a diamond it's brilliance or how it reflects light (how it sparkles) determined by the angle a diamond is cut

  • Clarity - is determined by the number and size of inclusions (that can be air bubbles, cracks, flaws or another mineral the diamond has.) The fewer it has the more valuable the diamond is. Grades are FL (flawless), IF (minor surface blemishes), VVS1-VVS2 (very, very small inclusions), VS1-VS2 (very small inclusions), SI1-SI2 (small inclusions), I1-I2-I3 (imperfect or have inclusions you can see with your eyes)

  • Color - the closer a diamond is to being white or colorless the more valuable it is. Reason being it lets more light through which results in the sparkle of a diamond. Diamonds graded D, E and F are colorless. G, H and I are near colorless. J shows a little hint of color. K, L and M have more color you'll notice and N through Z you notice even more color.

  • Carat - is simply the unit used to measure the weight of a diamond

The shape of your diamond is really more a matter of your own personal taste. Shapes include antique or cushion cut diamonds, asscher cut diamonds, brilliant or round, emerald shape, heart shaped, marquise, oval, pear shaped diamonds, princess, radiant and trilliant diamonds. Before shopping for a diamond you should have a budget for what you want to spend and if choosing the ring yourself, be sure to have an idea of what her tastes are.
