For the kids or even some of us a little older, there are kids books on dinosaurs and fossils. Most little boys I know love dinosaurs, so why not let them learn more about sauropods, stegosaurs, theropods and those other rather large fellas.  They also cover some ghost towns and history tourism, metal detecting, relic hunting and lost and/or buried treasure, ship wrecks and more.

I recently watched a very interesting television show about rockhounding. To be honest, I didn't know what it was until watching the show. The definition of rockhounding is the recreational collecting of rocks and/or mineral specimens from their natural environment. It means regular people just like you and I can actually visit areas of the country and search for gem stones such as amethysts, opals and others. Other than having to pay a small fee of maybe $25 or so a day, (depending on the individual area you visit) we can get ourselves a rockhounding book, find an area to do our rockhounding and with a few simple tools we might find ourselves a large amethyst, opal or other gem stone to keep. Simple as that. For any parents out there who may have themselves a little geologist in the making, this I'm sure would be a big thrill for them to find their own gem stones or rocks. Quite educational as well.
