jewelry
Celtic jewelry's very popular among people of Irish
decent. To be honest, I didn't know much about it even though my family tree consists of quite a
lot of Irish and Scotch relatives. You don't need to be of Irish, Scottish, or
Welsh descent though to appreciate the beauty and meaning of this jewelry. It's
made with meticulous craftsmanship, is of excellent quality and has a unique
style. Celtic jewelry can be referred to as Irish jewelry, Scottish
jewelry or Welsh jewelry.

Are you planning a traditional Irish wedding, Scottish wedding or Welsh wedding?
Many times Celtic wedding bands are chosen instead of more traditional wedding
rings and often are Claddagh rings.
They have a crown, two holding hands and a heart on the band. Most bridal Claddagh wedding rings have a stone inlaid and very detailed setting. The two
hands symbolize two people coming together in holy matrimony. The heart is the
foundation of their love and the crown symbolizes total perfection. Colloquial
translations to the Irish word Claddagh are: Friendship (hands), Love (heart)
and Loyalty (crown). The Claddagh design comes from the Aran Islands and Galway
Area and often are given as a sign of friendship between friends as well as a symbol of love between lovers.

There are many Irish wedding traditions, Scottish wedding traditions and other
Celtic wedding traditions you might want to incorporate into your wedding plans.
Certainly Celtic wedding bands are one. We all know about the "Something old, Something new, Something borrowed,
Something blue" Maybe your Mom, Nanna or a favorite Aunt might have a
handkerchief made from Irish lace you might want to borrow. Another is an Irish
coin for those of Irish decent, those of Scottish or Welsh decent would be an
old British sixpence or penny and it would be worn in their shoe.

Celtic design jewelry has a variety of Celtic knot patterns. One of the more
popular is the Celtic love knot. The knot symbolizes a meeting place where two
people cross paths. In addition to the lovers knot, there's the eternity knot
and trinity knot, otherwise known as the triquetra knot. A common
symbolic meaning of knot jewelry is love. Some believe
the intricate looping in Celtic knots was a way to keep out evil spirits. Also,
the looping Celtic knot design can mean eternity and interconnectedness. There
is no definitive guide to Celtic knot symbolism which only, adds to their
mystery and appeal.

Jewelry has been made in Ireland for 4,000 years. Celtic jewelry traditionally
is made in yellow or white gold and many styles are available. Celtic crosses
and Claddagh rings are very popular. The best Celtic
jewelry is traditionally handcrafted by a professional. Under
Irish law dating back to 1637, in the reign of Charles I, all jewelry of
precious metals must be assayed and stamped with the official hallmark - the
traditional letter symbol for the year it was crafted, guaranteeing the purity
of the gold, platinum or silver and the official insignia of the Irish Assay
Office in Dublin Castle. Ireland is one of the few countries in the world that
insists on every piece of jewelry being independently tested in this way.

A little history about Celtic jewelry
There's quite a bit written about the history of Celtic jewelry online and
many different opinions on their meanings. According to Irish legend, St. Patrick
created the first Celtic cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross. To some
the circle of Celtic crosses may be a symbol of eternity and endlessness of
God's love. Some say the four arms of it represent air, earth, fire and water.
Others believe the meaning to be the four directions of the compass and others
feel it means - body, heart, mind and soul. The Irish cross is an extremely popular piece of Celtic jewelry that's found in a wide range of
styles.

The Celtic Cross is probably the best known symbol of Early Christianity
in Ireland. The High Celtic Cross is a self contained monument, and some Crosses
in Ireland, reach as high as 20 feet. They are typically made of sandstone, and
their primary feature is a circle connecting the arms. The rings encircling the
high cross could likely be a symbol of the cosmos, and at its center is the crucifixion of Christ.
A little history about Claddagh jewelry
The romantic story of the mystical and beautiful
Claddagh ring began over 300 years ago in the ancient fishing
village of Claddagh just outside the walls of the City of Galway on the west
coast of Ireland. Legend has it if a Claddagh ring is worn on the right hand with
design facing outward it means the person is single. If facing inward the person
is in a relationship. If a Claddagh ring is worn on the left hand ring finger,
facing outward the person is engaged. When on the left hand ring finger and facing inward
the person would be married.

There are several stories about the origins of the Claddagh. Being the hopeless
romantic that I am, this one is my favorite. Once upon a time there lived a Prince who fell in love with a common maid. To convince her father
that he only had the best of intentions, he designed a ring with a crown
representing loyalty, hands representing friendship and the heart represented
his love for her. He proposed to the maid with this ring and after the father heard the explanation of the symbolism of the ring, he gave his blessing.
And....of course they lived happily ever after
